How to Use This Tool

About the compendium

The compendium is a tool that allows you to explore 78 programs currently serving young people who are not in school or working across the United States. This tool is designed to provide basic information about a diversity of programs; it does not provide all information about every program. The compendium links to each program’s website where you can learn more about the program. Read about the methodology used to develop the compendium (Link to methodology appendix).

How to use the filters

There are 5 categories you can use to filter programs: location, education outcomes, employment outcomes, evidence, and practices. Click the “+” sign to expand each category and select the characteristics of the programs you want to learn more about.

  • Location: states and territories where the program operates
  • Target employment and education outcomes: Outcomes that the program seeks to achieve related to employment or education.  Programs may target other outcomes (e.g. housing stability), but those are not included in the compendium.
  • Evidence: Whether the program is in the evidence gap map
  • Practices: Services provided or approaches to implementation used by the program, organized in seven categories. Definitions of each practice are listed here (Link to definitions appendix).

Program pages

Each blue tile shows an overview of the programs in the compendium, including program and operating organization names: location(s); year founded; annual number of participants, whether the program targets employment or education outcomes; and whether the program is in the evidence gap map. To learn more about a particular program, click its blue program tile. Each program page had five sections: overview, target outcomes, practices, and evidence. Click through the categories on the left side to view the information about the program. If the program is in the evidence gap map, the evidence menu will appear and includes a link to the program’s related publications in the evidence gap map.
